San Pedro Town

Cities in Belize to visit

1. Re: What part of Belize to stay in?

There are four main beach areas in Belize, as well as more isolated small islands and the atolls.

The busiest and most visited is Ambergris Caye. Lots of lodging choices, lots of restaurants, fun beach bars, some shopping, live music in the evenings. Right in town can be busy, but you don't have to get very far away for peace and quiet. The beaches are pretty narrow, but the sand is soft and white and the water is blue. To be honest, no where in Belize are you going to find world class beaches.

Caye Caulker is a short boat ride away from Ambergris. Similar, but much smaller island. More of a backpacker vibe. I like it there, but only for a few days. Not much in the way of beaches.

Hopkins is on the mainland, never been, don't know much about the area.

Placencia is a peninsula in southern Belize. The peninsula is about 16 or so miles long, with the village of Placencia being at the southern tip. Nice little town. Plenty of places to stay and eat/drink. The beaches are really pretty. However, the water isn't as clear, and the sand is dark and coarse.

Ambergris is less than a mile from the barrier reef, it get further away as you head south. From Placencia it's 19 miles.
